Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission – World Consumer Rights Day 2025

Overview

The essay competition is being held in observance of World Consumer Rights Day celebrated on March 15, annually.

Each year a topic is selected that is focused on issues that directly impact consumers and actions that can be taken to address the same.

This essay competition is organized in an effort to sensitize youths at the secondary school level to the issues of sustainability and waste reduction.

Target Participants

Students ages 14 to 16 from schools within Guyana are encouraged to participate. 

Topic 

Discuss: How Youths can lead the movement of sustainable consumption and waste reduction.

General Rules

  • The competition is open only to students ages 14 to 16
  • Essays must have a minimum of 2,000 and a maximum of 2,500 words.
  • Essays must be double-lined lined spaced.
  • Essays must be original and written by the student.
  • Co-authored essays are not accepted.

Essays should carry the following details on the cover sheet:

Name of student, Essay Title, Name of School and number, Personal number.

Any portion of the submission, which is protected by copyright, any other intellectual property right or right of a third party, may not be entered unless the author has obtained all required authorizations.

Submission Deadline

The deadline for submission is March 3, 2025.

Submissions should be emailed to – registrar@ccac.gov.gy  with the subject line, “Submission for Essay Competition”, or delivered to the address, Competition, and Consumer Affairs Commission,  National Exhibition Centre, Sophia, in an envelope marked “Essay Competition”.

Essays will be judged based on the following criteria:

  1. Content (Responsiveness to the topic. The subject is discussed clearly.
  2. Overall organization, writing style, spelling and grammar.
  3. Adherence to the contest rules regarding format, originality, citations, and bibliographies.
  4. Effectiveness – student’s peers could understand the essay.

The decision of the Judge shall be final & binding on all the participants.

Awards

First, second, and third-place prizes for students and trophies for each winning school will be awarded.

The prizes are:

1st – $100,000 Gift Voucher plus a Trophy for the School

2nd – $75,000 Gift Voucher plus a Trophy for the School

3rd– $50,000 Gift Voucher plus a Trophy for the School
